Borobudur

A monumental Mahayana Buddhist stupa complex in central Java, built under Shailendra patronage around the late eighth to ninth centuries, and constructed within a few generations and a short distance of major Hindu temple building at Prambanan. Borobudur is evidence for two claims in this Journey at once: that Buddhism travelled the maritime route as far as Java under royal patronage, and that arrival did not mean replacement — Buddhist and Hindu monumental religion were sponsored by neighbouring or overlapping courts, and the resulting forms are recognisably Javanese rather than imported wholesale.
