Denmark Strait Sill

The shallowest constriction of the Denmark Strait between Greenland and Iceland, about 620 m deep, and the single largest gateway through which dense water from the Nordic seas enters the deep North Atlantic. Cold, dense overflow water spills across the sill continuously and descends the slope beyond it as a gravity current — the largest continuous density-driven cascade in the world ocean by volume. Moored measurements give a revised mean transport of 3.20 ± 0.50 Sv, with estimates in the literature spanning roughly 3.2 to 3.5 Sv depending on method and period.
