Hadrian's Wall

A linear frontier work of roughly 117 km (80 Roman miles) across northern Britain, with milecastles, turrets and forts, begun under Hadrian from 122 CE. It is best read not as a defensive barrier against invasion but as a controlled permeable frontier: a customs, surveillance and movement-control line. It is a component of the transnational UNESCO World Heritage property 'Frontiers of the Roman Empire' (Hadrian's Wall inscribed 1987, ref. 430).
