John F. Kennedy Space Center

NASA's launch site on Merritt Island, Florida, acquired from 1962 to give the Saturn V a pad clear of the crowded Cape Canaveral complex to its south. Launch Complex 39 was built for it, with two pads served by a Vehicle Assembly Building tall enough to stack a Saturn V vertically and a crawler-transporter to carry the assembled stack to the pad. Every crewed American lunar launch has left from LC-39, Apollo from Pad A and Artemis from Pad B, and the same buildings — with new mobile launchers and a taller stack — serve the Space Launch System. It is a distinct object from either pad: the pads are structures, the centre is the institution and the ground that hold them.
