Lighthouse of Alexandria (the Pharos)

The tower on the eastern tip of the Pharos peninsula that guided shipping into Alexandria's Eastern Harbour and gave its name to lighthouses in several European languages. It was damaged repeatedly by earthquakes; the tremor and tsunami of 1303 is generally taken as the point at which its light went out, and a further shock in 1323 destroyed most of what remained. Sultan Qaitbay built a fort on the site between 1477 and 1479, reusing stone from the ruin. From 1994 a French team under Jean-Yves Empereur mapped the submerged blocks off the fort, recording some 3,500 architectural items including columns, sphinxes, obelisks and colossal statuary.
