Ostia Antica

node · earth

Rome's river-mouth port and the physical junction between the sea network and the city. Its excavated warehouses, guild offices and the mosaic-floored Piazzale delle Corporazioni show shipping associations from across the Mediterranean operating in one square. Ostia silted and was superseded by Trajan's artificial hexagonal harbour at Portus, which is the practical answer to how a city of several hundred thousand ate.
