Philae temple complex (relocated to Agilkia Island)

The Ptolemaic and Roman temple complex of Isis, the second most celebrated rescue of the Nubia campaign. Already partly submerged for much of each year by the older Aswan Low Dam, Philae was dismantled and re-erected on the neighbouring island of Agilkia, which was re-shaped to resemble the original. It is included here because it makes the Nubia campaign legible as a programme rather than a single heroic gesture: the campaign relocated some 22 monuments in Lower Nubia and ran from 1960 to its formal close on 10 March 1980.
