The European terminus of the Ottoman Oriental Railway and the arrival point of the through Orient Express, built between 1888 and 1890 by the Prussian architect August Jasmund — sent to Istanbul to study Ottoman architecture and staying to teach at the School of Polytechnics — and opened on 3 November 1890 under the name Müşir Ahmet Paşa Station. Its style mixes orientalist motifs with neoclassical symmetry, which is exactly what a European railway company building an eastern terminus for European passengers would commission. It has been out of main-line passenger use since the Marmaray works and now houses a railway museum and cultural venue. Note the sequence, which is often reported backwards: the 1883 train did not arrive here, because the building did not yet exist.
