Temple of Artemis at Ephesus (the Artemision)

The great Ionic temple of Artemis near modern Selçuk in western Türkiye, rebuilt several times on the same spot. The temple standing in 356 BCE was burned by an arsonist named Herostratus who, by the ancient account, wanted his name remembered; it was rebuilt on a still larger scale. The final structure was pulled down by a Christian crowd in 401 CE. Excavation from the nineteenth century recovered sculptured column drums and other fragments, many of which are now in the British Museum. A single re-erected column stands on the waterlogged foundation platform today.
