The two-stage lander built by Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation at Bethpage, New York — the first crewed vehicle designed to operate only in vacuum, and therefore never streamlined or heat-shielded. The descent stage carried a deeply throttleable descent engine, landing gear, consumables and surface payload, and served as the launch platform for the ascent stage, which carried two crew back to rendezvous with the command module in lunar orbit. A landing-configuration LM massed about 15 tonnes fuelled. Nine flew with crews between 1969 and 1972 and six landed. On Apollo 13 the LM Aquarius, designed to sustain two men for two days, kept three alive for roughly four by supplying power, oxygen, water and course-correction propulsion after the service module failed.
