The three-stage super heavy-lift rocket developed for Apollo under Wernher von Braun at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center. It stood 110.6 m tall and weighed roughly 2,900 tonnes fuelled. The S-IC first stage burned kerosene and liquid oxygen through five F-1 engines producing about 7.6 million pounds of thrust (34 MN); the S-II and S-IVB upper stages used liquid-hydrogen J-2 engines, the S-IVB restarting in orbit for translunar injection. It could send roughly 43 tonnes toward the Moon. Thirteen flew between November 1967 and May 1973 and none lost a crew, though the uncrewed Apollo 6 suffered severe pogo oscillation and engine shutdowns and Apollo 13's second stage lost a centre engine early. Its last flight lifted the Skylab workshop; no Saturn V was ever reused or reflown.
