Arkwright patents the water frame

In the same year as Watt's condenser patent, Richard Arkwright patented a roller-drafting spinning machine producing yarn strong enough for warp. Because it needed continuous external power it could not be worked in a cottage, and it therefore carried the factory with it as a condition of its use.
