The first Berlin Marathon, in the Grunewald

A small race is run through the Grunewald forest west of the divided city, organised by Horst Milde and styled a people's marathon. Reported participation differs between accounts — 244 finishers in one telling, 286 participants in another. It is a forest race in a walled half-city, and nothing about the course yet resembles the flat city-centre loop on which most of the sport's world records will be set.

Historical — it happened, and the record is settled.
