An El Nino early in the year and record tropical North Atlantic warmth later in it combine to produce a drought more extensive than 2005. The Rio Negro at Manaus reaches a record low in October. The recurrence interval, not the severity, is what changes the scientific conversation - a once-in-a-century event that repeats in five years was not correctly characterised.
