Aircraft profiles show the eastern Amazon emitting more carbon than it absorbs

Gatti and colleagues publish results from repeated vertical aircraft profiles flown over four sites through the 2010s, finding the eastern and especially southeastern basin to be a net carbon source while the wetter northwest remains a sink. Unlike a drought-year measurement, this describes a change of state in one region rather than a temporary perturbation across all of it.

Recorded on The Southeastern Amazon as a Carbon Source

  1. A drought in the southwestern basin reverses the carbon sink
  2. Drought sensitivity of the Amazon is published
  3. A second severe drought follows within five years
  4. Aircraft profiles show the eastern Amazon emitting more carbon than it absorbs
