Edison demonstrates recorded and reproduced sound

The tinfoil phonograph records and plays back sound for the first time, cutting a vertical groove into foil wrapped around a cylinder. It is a laboratory demonstration rather than a music industry, and it will be a decade before a format capable of mass duplication exists — but from this point a performance can, in principle, outlive the performance.

Historical — it happened, and the record is settled.
