Drilling on Enewetak reaches volcanic basement beneath the reef

Boreholes sunk on Enewetak Atoll during United States site investigation work passed through more than a kilometre of reef-derived carbonate before striking volcanic rock. The stratigraphy is what Darwin's subsidence theory predicts and what the competing shallow-platform explanation does not, and it is generally taken as the confirmation of the 1842 argument, one hundred and ten years after it was published.

Historical — it happened, and the record is settled.
