An atoll in the northern Marshall Islands, and the place where Darwin's theory of reef formation stopped being a hypothesis.

  • evidence for Charles Darwin — Drilling through the atoll to volcanic basement turned the 1842 subsidence hypothesis into a measured result: the coral cap is as deep as continuous upward growth over a sinking foundation requires, which a shallow sea-level platform could not produce.
