The first calendar year above 1.5 °C above pre-industrial
The World Meteorological Organization's consolidated analysis of the major global temperature datasets reports 2024 as the warmest year in the instrumental record and the first calendar year with a global mean surface temperature more than one and a half degrees Celsius above the 1850–1900 baseline, at approximately one and a half to one and six-tenths degrees depending on dataset. The distinction that matters and is routinely lost: a single year above one and a half degrees is not a breach of the Paris temperature goal, which is expressed in terms of long-term average warming, and an exceptionally strong El Niño contributed to the 2024 figure. It is nevertheless the first time the number has been reached, and it was reached roughly a decade after the agreement that named it.

State of the Global Climate 2024
Supports the finding that 2024 was the warmest year in the instrumental record and the first calendar year with global mean surface temperature more than 1.5 °C above the 1850–1900 baseline on the consolidated multi-dataset analysis. V55 verification basis: not retrieved in this session; the anomaly is stated as an approximate range across datasets rather than as a single figure, and the distinction between a single year and the long-term average that the Paris goal refers to is stated explicitly on the citing event.
