Tokyo becomes the sixth Major
The Tokyo Marathon runs its first race as part of the World Marathon Majors, opening the 2013-2014 series scoring period. It is the first Major outside Europe and North America, and it is the addition that makes "six stars" the thing a finisher collects.

Formation of the World Marathon Majors Announced
On 23 January 2006 the Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago and New York City marathons announced the World Marathon Majors, launched at the 110th Boston Marathon on 17 April 2006 with a points-based series and a one-million-dollar purse; Tokyo joined for the 2013 series.
