The Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest living structure — a 2,300-kilometre coral reef system off Queensland's northeastern coast composed of over 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands, covering approximately 344,400 square kilometres and containing the world's largest single coral reef collection, visible from space and generating an estimated $6.4 billion annually in tourism, fishing, and scientific value. As a Natural Extremity Node, Barrier Spirit maps the class of marine ecosystems whose intelligence value derives from their absolute biological scale: the Great Barrier Reef supports more than 1,500 fish species, 4,000 mollusc species, 240 bird species, 30 whale and dolphin species, and 6 of the world's 7 marine turtle species in a single contiguous system — the most biodiverse marine environment on Earth by species count in a defined area. The Reef's status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site (listed 1981) did not prevent its inclusion on the World Heritage in Danger list (proposed 2021, recommendation deferred under Australian government pressure) despite coral bleaching events in 2016, 2017, 2020, 2022, and 2024 that have cumulatively affected over 90% of surveyed reefs.
