Luxor is the world's largest open-air museum — the site of ancient Thebes, capital of Egypt during the New Kingdom (1550–1070 BC), the period of Egypt's greatest territorial extent and architectural output, now housing more than one-third of the world's ancient monuments on a 416-square-kilometre site that remains a functioning city of 500,000 residents. As a Cultural Power Node, Luxor Ancient maps the class of ancient geographies whose intelligence value derives from the concentration of intact monumental infrastructure: the Temple of Karnak — the largest religious complex ever built, expanded by successive pharaohs over 1,300 years and covering 100 hectares — is the most continuously developed single site in architectural history. The Valley of the Kings, on the west bank of the Nile, contains 64 known royal tombs including KV62 (Tutankhamun's tomb, discovered intact in 1922 by Howard Carter, triggering the first global media spectacle around an archaeological discovery) and KV5 (the tomb of the sons of Ramesses II, the largest funerary complex in the world at over 120 chambers). The intelligence value of Luxor Ancient is the scale of what remains unknown: despite 200 years of systematic excavation, ground-penetrating radar surveys conducted in 2015–2018 indicate that significant unexcavated structures remain beneath the modern city, the Karnak complex, and the West Bank — meaning Luxor is not a completed archive but an active discovery site whose most significant contents may not yet be visible.
