Megève is the French Alps' most architecturally coherent luxury ski village — a resort in the Mont-Blanc massif in Haute-Savoie at 1,113 metres altitude, whose modern skiing infrastructure (445 kilometres of runs in the Mont-Blanc Evasion area) is secondary in prestige to the village itself: a medieval village centre with cobblestone streets, a 14th-century church (the Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste), a covered market, and a restaurant and hotel ecology (including the Flocons de Sel three-Michelin-starred restaurant) that constitute one of the most aesthetically complete pedestrian ski village environments in the Alps. Megève was consciously developed as an alternative to St. Moritz by the Rothschild family in the early 1920s — Noémie de Rothschild purchased the original site in 1916 — and its original social character as a destination for Parisian haute-bourgeoisie and French Jewish high society (disrupted during the Occupation and gradually rebuilt post-war) persists in its current social character: a resort that attracts French and European families of established wealth and cultural confidence rather than the international ultra-high-net-worth clientele that St. Moritz and Courchevel attract.
