Volcanoes National Park is the most consequential primate conservation geography on Earth — a 160-square-kilometre Rwandan montane forest in the Virunga volcanic chain that harbours approximately one-third of the world's surviving mountain gorilla population, a species whose total population of approximately 1,063 individuals (as of the 2018 census) makes them one of the rarest great apes in existence. As a Natural Extremity Node, Rwanda Gorilla maps the class of wildlife sanctuaries whose intelligence value derives from the combination of biological rarity and conservation success: mountain gorillas were projected to be extinct by 2000 based on 1980s population trends of fewer than 600 individuals; the 2018 census result of over 1,000 individuals represents one of the few cases in conservation history where a critically endangered great ape population has increased rather than declined, a result directly attributable to the militarised anti-poaching programme and community revenue-sharing model developed jointly by Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The gorilla trekking permit system — $1,500 per person per visit, with permits directly funding conservation and community programmes — is the most economically productive conservation revenue model for a single wildlife species on the planet, demonstrating that extreme access restriction (maximum 96 visitors per day across all habituated groups, 1-hour maximum with each family) combined with extreme pricing can both fund conservation and create an experience whose scarcity constitutes its primary value. Rwanda's transformation from genocide site (1994) to premium gorilla tourism destination (by 2010) is the most rapid national image rehabilitation in post-conflict African history, with conservation and tourism infrastructure serving as deliberate instruments of national rebuilding.
