The Tokyo Marathon is the newest of the six Abbott World Marathon Majors and the most logistically precise — a 42.195-kilometre race held annually in early March, starting at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building in Shinjuku, traversing Asakusa, Nihonbashi, and the Imperial Palace perimeter before finishing in front of the Tokyo Big Sight convention centre, with 38,000 runners selected by lottery from approximately 300,000 applicants globally, supported by approximately 2.3 million spectators along the route — making it simultaneously the world's most oversubscribed marathon lottery and the major with the highest ratio of spectators to runners. The Tokyo Marathon's specific quality as a running experience derives from Japan's support culture: the tamashii (spirit) with which Japanese volunteer organisations, running clubs, and private citizens maintain the spectator and support presence along the full 42 kilometres — with taiko drumming at intervals, school children holding signs, and food and drink offered by private individuals between the official aid stations — creates an atmosphere of communal encouragement without equivalent at any other major.
