Victoria Falls is the world's largest curtain of falling water — a 1,708-metre-wide, 108-metre-high waterfall on the Zambezi River forming the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia, generating a spray column visible from 50 kilometres and producing a roar audible from 40 kilometres, giving it its local Kololo name Mosi-oa-Tunya — "the smoke that thunders." As a Natural Extremity Node, Victoria Falls maps the class of geological features whose intelligence value derives from the absolute scale of their physical dimensions: at peak flow (February–May), Victoria Falls carries 500 million litres of water per minute over its lip, making it approximately twice the combined volume of both Niagara Falls and five times the height of Horseshoe Falls — a comparison that makes legible why David Livingstone, who named the falls in 1855 after Queen Victoria, described them as "the most wonderful sight I had witnessed in Africa." The falls' geopolitical position — straddling Zimbabwe and Zambia, with the primary tourist infrastructure split between Victoria Falls town (Zimbabwe) and Livingstone (Zambia) — makes it one of the few natural wonders whose access requires a binary national choice with distinct experiential implications: Zimbabwe provides the widest view across the full width of the falls from the rainforest path; Zambia provides access to the Boiling Point at the base of the gorge and the Devil's Pool natural infinity pool at the lip, from which swimmers hang over the edge during low water. Victoria Falls demonstrates that natural extremity at this scale is inherently borderless: the water does not recognise the political geography that divides its management, and the experience is most complete only when both access points are used.
