On 28 July 2010 the World Heritage Committee removed the Galápagos Islands from the List of World Heritage in Danger, finding significant progress by Ecuador; IUCN and the Galápagos Conservancy publicly argued the removal was premature. ALSO: The Galápagos Islands were inscribed in 1978 and placed on the List of World Heritage in Danger in 2007 because of invasive species, unregulated tourism growth and overfishing.

Establishes the World Heritage List, the List of World Heritage in Danger, the 21-member World Heritage Committee, the World Heritage Fund, and names ICCROM, ICOMOS and IUCN as advisory bodies; asserts a duty on the international community as a whole to co-operate in protecting heritage of outstanding universal value while leaving sovereignty with the State Party.
