Africa's largest social carnivore, assessed Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, a category it has held in successive assessments since 1996. The 2023 assessment used an estimate of roughly 23,000 adult and subadult lions in Africa; other summaries of the same assessment give a 22,000–25,000 range. Lions are the species that most sharply expresses the conflict at reserve edges: they are the primary draw for photographic tourism and simultaneously the principal cause of livestock loss for pastoralist households living beside reserves, which makes retaliatory killing, not habitat loss alone, a leading proximate threat.
