Okavango Delta

An inland alluvial fan in north-western Botswana where the Okavango River terminates in permanent swamp and seasonally flooded grassland rather than reaching the sea. Inscribed as the 1,000th UNESCO World Heritage site in June 2014 on natural criteria. The delta supports elephant, lion, African wild dog and both rhinoceros species, and its flood pulse — arriving months after the Angolan highland rains — governs both wildlife movement and human livelihoods. Water security depends on catchment decisions made in Angola and Namibia, outside Botswana's control.
