Serengeti Biodiversity Programme

The long-term research programme founded in the Serengeti in 1964 by A. R. E. Sinclair and now led from the University of Glasgow by Grant Hopcraft. It maintains and extends more than sixty years of continuous data on weather, vegetation, fire, wildlife and people, including the wildebeest population series that underpins nearly every figure in this Journey and a GPS-collar dataset covering 62 wildebeest across 1999–2022. Its existence is the reason the Serengeti can be discussed quantitatively at all — most migratory systems have no comparable record.
