Titanic carried one of the most powerful Marconi installations afloat — a 5 kW rotary spark-gap set with call sign MGY, guaranteed to about 250 nautical miles and reaching far further at night. Crucially the operators worked for the Marconi company, not White Star: their paid business was passenger telegrams, and ice reports competed with that traffic. Wireless summoned the Carpathia and saved everyone who survived, and its gaps — a set switched off aboard the Californian, warnings that never reached the bridge — shaped the reforms that followed. Contrary to legend, Titanic's use of SOS alongside CQD was not the signal's first use.

- Titanic's Marconi station used call sign MGY; the operators were Marconi company employees whose principal work was passenger telegram traffic; the distress signal was sent first as CQD and subsequently as SOS.
