The capital of Paraná state in southern Brazil, and the city where bus rapid transit was invented as a deliberate substitute for a metro the city could not afford. From 1974 the municipality organised growth along structural axes, each carrying an express bus corridor with feeder routes, and zoned the highest densities along those axes rather than in the historic centre — a rare case of land use and transport being planned as one instrument. The result was widely exported, including to Bogotá, and roughly two hundred cities now run some version of it. Curitiba is included in this Journey not as a success story but as a durability test: the corridors are fifty years old, the ridership has fallen substantially from its peak, and the pressures now are fuel cost, fare policy and competition from private cars and ride-hailing. The lesson is that an urban system is not delivered when it opens; it is delivered continuously, out of an operating budget, or it degrades.
