The first image of a black hole shadow is published

The Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration released an image of M87* in simultaneous press conferences and a series of papers in the Astrophysical Journal Letters: an asymmetric bright ring about 42 microarcseconds across surrounding a dark centre. The dark region is the shadow cast by strong light bending near the photon sphere, not the horizon itself, and it is about two and a half times larger in diameter. The measured diameter yielded a mass of roughly six and a half billion suns, agreeing with the higher of two competing pre-existing estimates. Four imaging teams had worked independently and blind before comparing results.
A node is not a place. Drawing it on a map would assert something about the world that no stored fact supports.
