Albuquerque takes Malacca

A Portuguese force under Afonso de Albuquerque stormed and held Malacca, the entrepôt commanding the strait between the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea and the point through which Moluccan cloves, nutmeg and mace passed on their way west. The capture gave Portugal a position on the spice trade at its narrowest choke point and opened the way east to the Moluccas themselves; it also dispersed the merchant communities the port had concentrated, and much of the trade rerouted to rival harbours rather than submitting.
