Age of Exploration

The eastbound Pacific passage was worked out once, in 1565, and then sailed on essentially the same track for two and a half centuries.

Open water and prevailing wind, with nothing floating on it. For the first half-minute there is nothing to click on: the eye goes round one rotation, crosses the belt of calm, goes round the other, then works the margins looking for a name and finds latitude bands where the ports would be. The hands stay off the controls. This is a working chart, and the ocean drawn on it already has a grain, arriving before any person in this Journey is named.

This period was governed less by what could be reached than by what could be established — and wherever establishing it was impossible, something else was put in its place: a calculation instead of a coastline, a payment instead of a meridian, a register instead of a count. What can be known about the era now is very largely what those substitutes happened to keep.

Why Richseen chose this

The period is normally taught as a sequence of first arrivals, and the canonical record does not have that shape. The binding constraint was the homeward leg rather than the outward one; the decisive technical limit was a coordinate nobody could obtain at sea, which then decided the ownership of an archipelago; and the state that had been sending the largest ocean-going fleets in the world stopped by decision while it still could. It is also a catastrophe whose size can only be inferred, never counted, and here the inference is left visible end to end — from tribute registers and settlement archaeology to air trapped in Antarctic ice. A reader who can follow that reasoning has learned something transferable about how any large past quantity is known at all.

Trace the substitutions. Every route, boundary, crop and casualty figure here was settled either by something that could actually be established or by whatever was accepted in its place, and the thing accepted in its place was always somebody's choice.

A border neither party could find

The instrument limit of the second chapter turns into international law, fails on its own terms, and is resolved by a payment — which is the moment the reader sees what stands in for measurement.

Connections you would not expect

  • A demographic question about one hemisphere is argued, in part, from air trapped in ice at the opposite pole: if enough managed farmland reverted to vegetation, the regrowth should be visible in the carbon record. The corpus records the attribution as contested against volcanic, oceanic and climatic explanations, and the graph should show it as a claim under argument rather than a settled link.

  • An Andean mountain and a bay on Luzon are two ends of one arrangement. What crossed the Pacific westbound was not a Spanish export to a Spanish colony; it was the means of payment, going to meet the demand for it. Read together, the two records make the galleon look less like a colonial supply line and more like a settlement leg.

  • The plantation template was assembled on Atlantic islands before 1492, and its defining constraint is botanical: cut cane spoils within about a day, so the mill cannot stop, so the labour cannot stop. Putting the three records side by side shows a crop's spoilage rate setting a work schedule, and the collapse of one labour force being answered by the forced migration of another. The corpus marks the causal weight of that second link as debated.

  • Two state fleets entered the same ocean from opposite ends within a century of each other. One programme was ended by its own sponsor; the other became a permanent trading empire. The canonical relation already states the comparison, and it is the only place in the Atlas graph where the two commanders touch.

  • An instrument limitation and a clove archipelago are joined by a treaty. Because longitude could not be obtained at sea, the meridian the two crowns had agreed on had a far side that neither could locate, and the ownership of specific islands stayed arguable for decades on that ground alone. Very few connections in Atlas run this directly from a measurement problem to a sovereignty claim.

What is not settled

  • How many people were living in the Americas before contact?

    Twentieth-century estimates for the hemisphere have ranged from under ten million to over a hundred million, with the edited mid-range consensus sitting near the middle of that span. Later work combining the demographic approaches with a land-use reconstruction did not collapse the range. The Journey states the range and declines to choose a figure, because every proportion derived from it inherits the same bounds.

  • Is the CO₂ minimum around 1610 primarily a signal of abandoned farmland?

    The proposal is that regrowing vegetation on land no longer being worked drew carbon out of the atmosphere. Volcanic activity, ocean circulation and Little Ice Age cooling are competing explanations, and the stratigraphic community subsequently favoured a mid-twentieth-century marker for the boundary the proposal was made to define. The observation stands; the attribution is argued.

  • Who worked out the volta do mar, and when?

    The technique is attributed to fifteenth-century Portuguese practice in general. No identified voyage or navigator can be named for it, and the surviving record does not support one. The Journey's single most consequential piece of seamanship is anonymous.

  • Why did the Ming end the treasure voyages?

    Court factionalism, the cost, and a strategic reassessment of where the threat lay are all argued, and the question is genuinely unresolved among historians. What is not in dispute is the shape: the programme ended by decision. A separate problem attaches to the fleet — the largest ship dimensions transmitted by a later dynastic history imply a wooden hull that naval architects consider structurally implausible, and the corpus does not assert them.

  • Where did the Tordesillas antimeridian actually fall?

    It was never determined by the parties, and modern reconstructions still differ depending on which value of the league and which of the Cape Verde Islands are assumed. The question the treaty asked has no single answer even now, which is a more interesting fact than any answer would be.

  • How much of early modern population growth in Europe and China is attributable to the American crops?

    That the effect is real is agreed; the magnitude is not, and the quantitative claims are contested. The route by which maize reached China — overland, by sea, or both — is separately unresolved, and the gazetteer evidence dates the arrival without settling the path.

  • Why can this Journey put pins on cities and a headland, but not on a single one of its routes?

    Canonical knowledge stores a point or nothing. The wind system, the volta do mar and all three routes are recorded as unlocated, so the places a reader can see are the termini and the nodes — the very things this Journey argues were the least decisive part of it. The absence is in the model, not in the knowledge, and it is stated here rather than worked around with an invented line.

What to carry out of this

What can be counted about this period is very largely what somebody wanted taxable. The registers, licences and manifests that make the Atlantic trade quantifiable exist because a monopoly has to be documented to be enforced; the trade in people is measurable in unusual detail for the same reason, and the deaths in the Andes and the population of the Americas before contact are estimates because no comparable instrument was ever pointed at them. That is not a gap in the scholarship. It is the shape the record was given at the time by people deciding what was worth writing down, and it is still the shape of what anyone can say about it.

This is unfinished in the world, not only in the telling.
