The largest demographic catastrophe in the recorded human past, and the limb of the Columbian Exchange that ran in only one direction. Populations of the Americas had been separated from Afro-Eurasian disease pools for millennia and had no acquired or inherited resistance to smallpox, measles, typhus, influenza or, later, yellow fever and malaria. Epidemics repeatedly preceded the Europeans who carried them, moving along existing indigenous trade and communication networks, so that many societies were already collapsing when they were first described — which is one reason early European accounts systematically under-record what was there before. Modern reconstructions using colonial tribute records, archaeology, land-use proxies and ethnohistory converge on a pre-contact population of tens of millions falling by something close to ninety per cent within about a century. Two cautions belong in the same breath. Disease was not the whole mechanism: warfare, enslavement, forced relocation, the destruction of food systems and the collapse of the social capacity to care for the sick all multiplied mortality, and a purely epidemiological account quietly removes human agency from the record. And the numbers are estimates with wide bounds, not counts.
