The Victoria completes the first circumnavigation

The Victoria reached Sanlúcar de Barrameda under Juan Sebastián Elcano, having sailed west from the Moluccas across the Indian Ocean and round the Cape while avoiding Portuguese ports. Eighteen men landed, from five ships and some 270 who had sailed three years before. The voyage settled that the world could be circled and that the Pacific was vast; it did not settle the legal question it had been sent to answer, because the longitude of the Moluccas still could not be measured.
