The seven Ming treasure voyages

Seven state fleets under Zheng He sailed from China into Southeast Asia and across the Indian Ocean, reaching Calicut, Hormuz, the Arabian coast and the East African ports. They were tributary and diplomatic in purpose, carrying envoys and force rather than merchants, and they operated at a scale no European power approached for another century. After the seventh voyage returned the programme ended, and the Ming state turned away from ocean-going expeditions altogether — a decision, not a failure of capability.
