The last crewed lunar landing to date. Launched 7 December 1972 at 05:33 UTC, the only night launch of a Saturn V, carrying Eugene Cernan, Ronald Evans and Harrison Schmitt — the only professional geologist to fly to the Moon. The Lunar Module Challenger landed in the Taurus–Littrow valley, a site chosen for a mix of ancient highland massifs and possible young volcanic deposits, on 11 December 1972. Three moonwalks totalled about 22 hours, the Lunar Roving Vehicle covered roughly 35 km, and 110.5 kg of samples were returned, including the orange soil at Shorty crater that proved to be ancient volcanic glass. Cernan was the last person to stand on the lunar surface, on 14 December 1972. Splashdown 19 December 1972.
