Apollo Program

The United States crewed lunar programme run by NASA, committed by President Kennedy before a joint session of Congress on 25 May 1961 and flown from 1967 to 1972. It produced six crewed landings — Apollo 11, 12, 14, 15, 16 and 17 — put twelve people on the lunar surface and returned about 382 kg of rock and soil. Apollo was designed as a demonstration of national capability inside a decade, not as sustained occupation: every landing was a short sortie with all hardware carried from Earth, and no infrastructure was left behind beyond experiment packages. That framing explains most of its engineering choices, including the equatorial landing sites and the absence of any resource-use element.
