The uncrewed first flight of the Space Launch System and the first flight of Orion beyond Earth orbit. Launched 16 November 2022 at 06:47:44 EST (11:47 UTC) from Kennedy Space Center Launch Complex 39B. Orion made an outbound powered flyby about 130 km above the lunar surface on 21 November, entered a distant retrograde orbit, and on 26 November reached 432,210 km (268,563 miles) from Earth — farther than any spacecraft built to carry humans had flown. It splashed down in the Pacific off Baja California on 11 December 2022 after 25 days and about 11 hours. The flight qualified the vehicle but also revealed unexpected loss of charred material from the Orion heat shield, which drove a two-year investigation.
