The research organisation founded in London in 2010, acquired by Google in 2014, and merged with Google Brain in 2023, which produced a disproportionate share of the results this Journey examines: AlphaGo, AlphaFold, GNoME and GenCast. Its record is the reason the Journey can be structured as a comparison rather than as a verdict. AlphaFold was tested blind by an experiment it did not run and is now used by millions of researchers; GenCast was published with an evaluation against an operational forecasting centre's own ensemble, and that centre subsequently put a comparable system into service; GNoME was announced with a headline count of discoveries and challenged within five months by specialists who examined a sample of them. Same organisation, same method family, three very different evidential outcomes — which is a stronger argument than any general statement about whether laboratories over-claim.
