ICOMOS (International Council on Monuments and Sites)
node · earth
Founded 22 June 1965 in Warsaw, one year after the Venice Charter of 1964, ICOMOS is the non-governmental professional body named in the 1972 Convention as an advisory body for cultural properties. It evaluates nomination dossiers, undertakes advisory and reactive monitoring missions, and drafts the technical recommendations the Committee may accept or override. Its influence is real but bounded: it recommended in-danger listing for Venice ahead of the 2023 Riyadh session and the Committee declined. Its headquarters is in Charenton-le-Pont, in the Paris suburbs.
