A California company built around a single narrow proposition: fly a small automated pharmaceutical reactor in orbit on a free-flying satellite bus, crystallise a drug compound in microgravity, and return the product to the ground in a re-entry capsule. Its first mission, W-1, launched in June 2023 as a rideshare payload and crystallised the antiviral ritonavir on orbit. The capsule's return was then held up for roughly eight months while re-entry authorisation was resolved between the Federal Aviation Administration and the range that would receive it, and it finally landed at the Utah Test and Training Range in February 2024. Subsequent capsules have returned to a range in South Australia. The company is a useful test case for in-space manufacturing precisely because its constraint turned out to be regulatory rather than technical: the hard part was not making the crystals but obtaining permission to bring them home, and no established route existed for a private commercial re-entry.
