Master of the Carpathia, born 1869. Woken with Titanic's distress call, he turned his ship immediately, ordered every ounce of steam to the engines at the cost of passenger heating, posted extra lookouts, and had blankets, soup, ladders and slings prepared before he arrived. He drove through ice at above his ship's design speed and reached the boats about 04:00. He was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, later commanded the Mauretania, was knighted in 1926 and became Commodore of the Cunard Line.
