Commodore of the White Star Line, born at Hanley, Staffordshire in January 1850 and at sea since 1867. He had commanded Olympic on her maiden voyage and was aboard when she collided with HMS Hawke in 1911. Titanic was to have been his last command before retirement. He maintained about 22 knots through a region for which he held ice reports, was on the bridge within moments of the collision, and died in the sinking; accounts of his final minutes conflict and no reliable record of his fate exists.
