Master of the SS Californian, born 1877. Having stopped his ship for the night in ice, he was twice informed that a nearby vessel was firing white rockets and did not order his wireless operator woken. Both 1912 inquiries held that his ship could have reached Titanic; Mersey's finding effectively ended his career with Leyland. He spent five decades seeking to clear his name, and a 1992 British reappraisal accepted that the Californian was probably too far off to have arrived in time while still condemning the failure to act.
