Managing director and head of the drawing office at Harland and Wolff, born at Comber, County Down in 1873 and nephew of the yard's chairman Lord Pirrie. He led Titanic's design work and sailed on the maiden voyage with the builder's guarantee group. Within about twenty-five minutes of the collision he had walked the damage with Captain Smith and established that with the first six compartments open to the sea the ship would founder in an hour or two — the judgement that started the evacuation. He did not survive.
