EAST (Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak)

EAST is a superconducting tokamak at the Institute of Plasma Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Hefei, Anhui province. Its purpose is long-pulse operation: holding a high-confinement, or H-mode, plasma steady for the timescales a power plant would need. On 20 January 2025 it sustained a steady-state high-confinement plasma for 1,066 seconds, breaking its own 2023 record of 403 seconds. The result is a confinement-duration result, not an energy result: EAST does not burn deuterium-tritium and produces no meaningful fusion power. It is included because duty cycle is one of the engineering gaps between a physics demonstration and a power station, and EAST is the clearest public marker of progress on it.
