A large Maya city in the northern Yucatán whose best-known structure, El Castillo or the Temple of Kukulcan, is a step pyramid about 24 m high with a further 6 m of temple on top and a square base of some 55.3 m. Its four stairways carry 91 steps each, which with the top platform give 365. At the equinoxes the stepped edge of the northern balustrade casts a serpentine shadow down the stair. The site was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1988 and elected a New7Wonder in 2007.
